CRENEL

crenel: the open spaces or indentations in parapets between battlements
I drew this one long ago, and held onto it for over a year because I wasn't happy with it. I felt I could do better.
This is my second attempt, and I'm much happier with it. Even though it depicts a rampart, it's got a proper castle feel to it, complete with towers, windows, and subtle shadows.
The term crenel, in case you were wondering, is based on the Latin term crena, meaning "notch."
What about the solid part of the battlement between the crenels? Sometimes referred to as the "teeth" of a battlement, these are known as merlons.
